is ham halal? v

When we question, “Is ham halal?” we’re examining its compatibility with religious guidelines. This question takes us on a journey to understand the complexities behind what we eat. Join us as we explore if ham fits into our halal lifestyle, considering how it connects to our personal beliefs and values.

Introduction:

The leg of a pig, also known as the “ham,” is called the pork. It is prepared by cutting the meat from a specific part of the pig’s body, drying it, and seasoning it with salt and other ingredients. It is enjoyed with great enthusiasm in many countries and is also used for medicinal purposes.

Just like other meats that are expertly prepared with spices, etc., it is similarly prepared for its excellent taste and flavor. However, it is possible that it is prepared for various purposes.

Religious Rule:

When deciding if it’s okay to eat or drink something, we look at what it’s made of. If all the parts are pure and allowed, it’s fine. But ham is impure and not allowed, from a religious point of view, so it should be avoided at any cost.

Arguments from Quran:

(1) Allah, the Most High, has guided: “”اِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَیْكُمُ الْمَیْتَةَ وَ الدَّمَ وَ لَحْمَ الْخِنْزِیْرِ وَ مَاۤ اُهِلَّ بِهٖ لِغَیْرِ اللّٰهِۚ-فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ غَیْرَ بَاغٍ وَّ لَا عَادٍ فَلَاۤ اِثْمَ عَلَیْهِؕ-اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُوْرٌ رَّحِیْم” Translation: He has forbidden you only carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been sacrificed to other than Allah. But if one is compelled by necessity, neither desiring it nor transgressing, then there is no sin upon him. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse: 173)

(2) In another instance, He guided: “قُلْ لَّاۤ اَجِدُ فِیْ مَاۤ اُوْحِیَ اِلَیَّ مُحَرَّمًا عَلٰى طَاعِمٍ یَّطْعَمُهٗۤ اِلَّاۤ اَنْ یَّكُوْنَ مَیْتَةً اَوْ دَمًا مَّسْفُوْحًا اَوْ لَحْمَ خِنْزِیْرٍ فَاِنَّهٗ رِجْسٌ اَوْ فِسْقًا اُهِلَّ لِغَیْرِ اللّٰهِ بِهٖۚ-فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ غَیْرَ بَاغٍ وَّ لَا عَادٍ فَاِنَّ رَبَّكَ غَفُوْرٌ رَّحِیْمٌ.” Translation: Say, “I do not find within what has been revealed to me anything forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine – for indeed, it is impure – or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful. (Surah Al-An’am, Verse: 145)

The explanation in Tafsir al-Kabeer states: “The consensus of the scholars is that the flesh of swine, in all its parts, is prohibited. Allah mentioned its flesh because the greater benefit is associated with it, similar to His saying: ‘When the call is made for the prayer on the day of Jumu’ah (Friday), then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade.’ The specific mention of trade is due to its greater importance to them. As for the hair of the swine, it is not explicitly mentioned, but there is a consensus on its prohibition and impurity.” (Tafsir al-Kabeer: 200/5, Published by Dar Ihya al-Turath al-Arabi)

Arguments from Hadith:

Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), I heard in the year of the Conquest of Mecca, in Mecca, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) saying: ‘Allah and His Messenger have prohibited the sale of intoxicants, carrion, swine, and idols.’ It was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what about the fat of carrion?’ He replied: ‘It is used for greasing ships, is put to use in tanning, and people light their lamps with it.’ Then he said, ‘It is unlawful, it is forbidden.’ Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) added, ‘May Allah curse the Jews! For Allah made the fat (of animals) unlawful for them, but they melted it and sold it and ate its price.
(Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Hadith: 1297)

Furthermore, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated: “Translation: The time is near when the son of Mary (i.e., Jesus) will descend among you as a just and fair ruler. He will break the cross, kill the pigs, and abolish the Jizyah (tax). At that time, wealth will be so abundant that no one will be willing to accept it.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 2222)

The opinion of the scholars of the Muslim community:

  1. Sheikh Ibn Hazm Zahiri writes: “It is unanimously agreed upon by the scholars of the Muslim community that the flesh, fat, and all parts of a pig, whether small or large, are prohibited. This includes its meat, fat, nerves, brain, cartilage, blood, brain, and skin; all of it is considered forbidden.” (Levels of Consensus, p. 149, published by Dar Al-Kutub Al-Ilmiyya)
  2. A comprehensive encyclopedia, compiled by combining the opinions of all four Islamic jurisprudential schools, was published by Kuwait. It states: “The pig, its flesh, and fat, along with all its parts, are prohibited. This is based on the verse of the Quran: {Say, ‘I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine – for indeed, it is impure – or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah.}” (Kuwaiti Jurisprudential Encyclopedia, 140/5)
  3. Sheikh Abbas Shuman mentioned: “The scholars of the four schools of thought unanimously agree on the prohibition of pig’s flesh and fat.”

In conclusion, based on the evidence and information available to us, it is established that consuming pork is not permissible and is considered prohibited according to Islamic law.
