Vodka: Is It Halal or Haram

Vodka is a type of liquor. This type of liquor was introduced by Europe in the 17th century, although some claim that its origin dates back to the 9th century, regardless of when and where it originated, it is important to know what ingredients are included in its composition.

Essentially, this liquor is distilled from potatoes and fermented grains, with alcohol comprising approximately forty percent of its composition. However, other ingredients are also included, and water is added as well. Although there are different methods of making it and the quantity of ingredients can vary, the result is an intoxicating liquor.

This liquor is colorless and odorless, as the aromatic ingredients included in it become odorless during its preparation. However, sometimes the effects of taste and aroma are not entirely absent.

Rulings:

Since “vodka” is considered a type of alcoholic beverage, therefore it will have the same ruling as that of alcohol, meaning according to religious requirements and principles, “vodka” is not permissible and halal. Another reason for its prohibition is the presence of alcohol in it.

Argument:

(1) Allah Almighty has guided in the Quran: “O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.” (Surah Al-Ma’idah, Verse: 90) O believers, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, idols, and divining arrows are impure and are from the handiwork of Satan, so abstain from them so that you may succeed.

(2) The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised: “Never drink wine, for it is the root of every evil.” (Musnad Imam Ahmad, Musnad Al-Ansar, Hadith of Mu’adh bin Jabal, 8/249, Hadith: 22136)

(3) The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said: “Every intoxicant is wine, and every intoxicant is forbidden.” (Sahih Muslim, Book of Drinks)

The Grand Mufti, Amjad Ali, states: “Drinking alcohol is forbidden, and it leads to many sins. Therefore, if it is referred to as sinful behavior and immodesty, then it is justified.” (Bahar-e-Shariat, Part Nine, Explanation of the Limit of Drinking, 2/385)

This includes a significant amount of alcohol, and Islamic scholars unanimously agree that if alcohol reaches the level of intoxication, it is forbidden. Some scholars even consider it as wine, meaning even a drop of it is forbidden and unlawful.
